Frequently Asked Questions

What's going to happen during my osteopathy appointment?

To help put your mind at ease, there is a detailed explanation of what happens during your osteopathic appointment on our What to Expect page.

Do I need a referral to see an osteopath?

No, you do not need a referral to see an osteopath. We are primary health care professionals, meaning that you can come straight to us for your health care. In fact, approximately 90% of our patients see us without a referral. However, if you would like a portion of your treatment funded by Medicare, you do need a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan from your GP.

Is the osteopath going to crack my neck/back?

The technical term for "cracking" is High Velocity Low Amplitude (HVLA) thrust technique. Other names include manipulation or adjustment. This is a technique that we can use during treatments, but only if the patient is comfortable with it. If we believe that a manipulation could be beneficial, we will always check with you first. There are other techniques that we can use instead that are still very effective.

Will I need to take my clothes off?

One of the treatment options that we often use is soft tissue massage. This involves using massage oil directly on the skin. If we feel this could be a beneficial technique, we will ask if you are comfortable removing the clothing in the area to be massaged. Due care is taken to cover you and gowns are available to wear if you would like. It is important to note that you do not have to remove any clothing at all if you are not comfortable doing so.

Do you accept Medicare/CDM/EPC referrals?

Yes we do. Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plans, formerly known as Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plans, can be provided by your GP. They give you up to 5 treatments in a calendar year that Medicare will rebate. You will be required to pay the full amount for your treatment, then we can swipe your Medicare card and the rebate can go straight into a Cheque or Savings account. The current amount that Medicare rebates as of July 2024 is $60.35 per treatment.

Do you accept DVA/TAC/Workcover/Home Care Packages?

Yes we accept all of these. Please let us know when you are booking if your treatment comes under any of these plans, and bring all related paperwork with you to your appointment.

Can I claim osteopathic treatment on my private health insurance?

Most health funds can provide a rebate on the spot from the HICAPS machine in our clinic. To be sure, please check with your health fund that you are covered for osteopathic treatment.

Can an osteopath give me a medical certificate?

Osteopaths can provide a certificate for workplace absence which is accepted by most employers. If you require time off work for an issue that you are receiving treatment for, we are more than happy to provide you with a certificate.

Do osteopaths treat pregnant women?

Yes we do. We treat pregnant women for the same conditions that we might see any patient for. Common issues that pregnancy can contribute to include hip pain, lower back pain and stiffness through the middle back. We have a pregnancy cushion that allows you to comfortably lie on your stomach, regardless of how far along you are in your pregnancy.

Can I bring my kids to my osteopathy appointment?

Absolutely. We love having kids come along, and we will do our best to keep them interested while you have your treatment. We have some books, toys and activities available, but feel free to bring your own options (and snacks if you like).

Do osteopaths treat children?

Yes, we treat people of all ages and we love kids. Most kids are healthy, so don't worry about bringing them in unless something is concerning you or they mention something to you. Some of the problems that have presented to us over the years include:

  • Babies struggling to turn their head one way

  • Back or neck pain in children/adolescents

  • Sporting injuries

  • Joint pain in the heel, ankle, hip, knee or shoulder

  • Headaches

  • Scoliosis

  • Growing pains

What does osteopathic treatment of a baby involve?

We use very gentle techniques for babies. This may include gentle massage or moving the joints into positions that help the body to relax. We don't manipulate or "crack" the joints of infants.

How much does an osteopathic treatment cost?
